Mr. Toshio Tamogami, Chief of Staff of Japan's Air Self-Defense Force from March 2007 to November 2008 discusses his idea of how to protect Japan's national interests during his appearance on the popular TV program tonight.
The world we live in now has observed a number of incidents in which the countries routinely try to pursue and/or secure their national interests by means of showing off military power. Thus, it is almost impossible for Japan to expect any benefits from its diplomatic negotiations to settle any international issues unless Japan maintains its military balance against the other parties. Since there exists no determination to protect Japan's national interests at all by enforcing its military forces, the Japan Self-Defense Forces are only defensive with total dependence on the U.S.A. for its offensive performance when required to counterattack. If Japan is attacked by either China or North Korea, Japan unfortunately has no military capacity to counterattack against them.
A proposal made by Mr. Toshio Tamogami to establish Japan's national forces is briefly described below.
1. Aircraft Carriers 3
2. Aegis-equipped ships 3
3. Nuclear powered submarines 4
4. Strategic bombers
5. Marine Corps
6. A number of military personnel 1.5 times larger than now
7. Nuclear warheads
(the above proposal can be realized with two thirds of the budget now allocated to support child raising under child allowance act promoted by the Democratic Party of Japan)
China has already made it clear that it will have 4 aircraft carriers by 2020. China has currently no means of invading Japan due to the lack of means to carry aircraft over the distance of 800 kilometers from China to Okinawa.
If China sends fighter jets to Okinawa, trying to fight over the sky of Okinawa now, they will exhaust most of fuels by the time they reach Okinawa. They may engage in a dogfight, say, for 5 minutes, all their jet fighters will crash into the Sea of Japan, running out of fuels.
However, once China acquires aircraft carriers, the whole situation will change. They will become capable of sending 100 jet fighters to Japan.
The above is a tentative translation of the proposal made by Mr. Toshio Tamogami on TV tonight. I have videotaped the program but I don't want to upload it, thereby avoiding possible violations of intellectual property rights.
